SUDANESE REBEL GENERAL TO SPEAK AT IOWA STATE

AMES, Iowa -- An Iowa State University graduate who is now leading a rebel force in Sudan will speak at ISU on Tuesday, March 12.

John Garang, founding member of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), will speak at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. He will speak on human rights issues in the Sudan. His talk is free and open to the public.

Garang has been the chairman of the SPLM and commander-in-chief of SPLA since 1983, when the two organizations were created. He is a member of the Leadership Council of the Sudanese Opposition National Democratic Alliance.

Garang was born in Southern Sudan in June 1945. He earned a B.S. from Grinnell College in 1971 and a Ph.D. from Iowa State in 1981.

The Sudanese civil war has claimed more than two million lives since it began in 1983.
