ISU'S SOLAR CAR TEAM WILL COMPETE IN FORMULA SUN GRAND PRIX

AMES, Iowa -- Team PrISUm, Iowa State University's solar car team, will compete in a Formula Sun Grand Prix, May 13-17, at Heartland Park, Topeka, Kan. The race will include 13 solar car teams, many of which competed in the American Solar Challenge last summer.

"We want to gain some vital race experience at the Formula Sun," said Team PrISUm Director and Iowa State student Valerie Sandefur. "This is almost an entirely new team from the one that raced in last year's American Solar Challenge. So racing in a 'non-racing' year will provide invaluable experience for our team."

The Formula Sun race will be held on a 2.1-mile closed track. It will include 28.5 hours of racing over a three-day period (May 15-17). The car that completes the most laps during the race is the winner.

Team PrISUm will race the PrISUm Odyssey solar car in the Formula Sun. Odyssey finished 16th in last year's cross-country American Solar Challenge.

The team currently is designing and beginning to build its next solar car, PrISUm Spectrum. They will race Spectrum in the 2003 American Solar Challenge, a Chicago to Los Angeles solar car race to be held July 2003.
