"LIGHTEN UP IOWA" A HEALTHFUL COMPETITION

AMES, Iowa -- Iowans looking to develop healthier habits, including increasing physical activity and eating more fruits and vegetables, are urged to create a team and join the "Lighten Up Iowa" competition.

The competition is a partnership of ISU Extension, the Iowa Department of Public Health and Iowa Games (which sponsors Olympic-style contests).

During the five-month competition, which begins Jan. 6, 2003, teams of people will work to improve their health habits, said Ruth Litchfield, an assistant professor of food science and human nutrition at Iowa State.

Teams can range from two people to 10 and may include such groups as families, work colleagues, clubs or organizations, schools and church members, she added.

"Participating in Lighten Up Iowa is a good way to spend more time with favorite people, have fun and encourage each other in healthier lifestyles," Litchfield said.

Activities will be logged and reported, and teams will be recognized for achievements in physical activity or weight loss.

The registration deadline for the competition is Jan. 6. A $10 fee per individual includes a T-shirt and enrollment in the Volkswalk at the 2003 Summer Iowa Games in Ames.

More information about the competition and registration forms are available at local county extension offices throughout the state or on the Lighten Up Iowa Web site at http://www.lightenupiowa.org/.
