INSECT HORROR FILM FESTIVAL FEATURES BUG FOOD AND FILM

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's annual insect horror film festival will be 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 1, in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. The festival is a twist on the traditional dinner and a movie in that it features food made with insects and a film about bugs. The event is free and open to the public.

"The annual festival provides the public with information about insects and how humans relate to them," said Vanessa Ware, president of ISU's Entomology Club, which puts on the festival. "It also allows people to try insects as food, which is quite common in other parts of the world, and to expose them to the science of entomology."

From 6 to 7:30 p.m., attendees will get a chance to taste some insect treats, such as cricket brittle and corn borer corn bread.

"The crickets taste sort of like peanuts," Ware said. "We've never cooked with corn borers before, so we shall see."

While people are munching on crispy critters, they will have a chance to see displays on insects and get the opportunity for some up-close quality time with Giant Millipedes, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, hornworm caterpillars and tarantulas provided by the Iowa State insect zoo.

At 7:30 p.m., the Disney-Pixar animated feature, "A Bug's Life," will be shown.
