CHAIR DISPLAY COMMEMORATES EFFECTS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

AMES, Iowa -- A chair display on the Iowa State University campus Wednesday, Oct. 23, draws visual attention to the problem of domestic violence. The display consists of chairs lining the sidewalk adjacent to the Sloss House on Iowa State's central campus.

Each chair has an attached profile that documents briefly the circumstances surrounding each victim's death. Ninety-seven Iowa women, men, and children have been killed statewide in domestic violence homicides since 1995.

"The chairs remind passersby that violence leaves an empty seat at the table," said Penny Rice, director of the Margaret Sloss Women's Center. The chairs will be displayed 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Domestic violence is a devastating problem in Iowa and nationally. Although men perpetrate a high percentage of domestic violence assaults, men and boys are also the victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence also occurs in relationships in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities.

The display is coordinated and sponsored by the Margaret Sloss Women's Center, Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support (ACCESS) and the YWCA.
