IOWA STATE WILL TEST SOFTWARE FOR CRAY X1 SUPERCOMPUTER

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University and Cray Inc., Seattle, today announced an agreement for Iowa State to test software products developed by Cray for its new X1 system. The Cray X1 is designed to be the world's most powerful supercomputer.

The two-year agreement calls for the High Performance Computing Group within Iowa State's Academic Information Technologies (AIT) office to develop advanced software analysis tools, and to use them to test the performance and functionality of the growing body of software Cray is creating for the new supercomputer. In return, Cray will donate high-performance computing (HPC) equipment to Iowa State.

The Cray X1 product will be formally announced later this year. Last week, Cray shipped five early-production X1 units to undisclosed customers.

"The High Performance Computing Group and its director, Glenn Luecke, are extremely talented at developing and using HPC analysis tools," said Cray chairman and CEO Jim Rottsolk. "We look forward to working with them and benefiting from their expertise."

"We're excited about continuing our work with Cray and developing software analysis tools to investigate the strengths of the Cray X1," Luecke said. "This alliance is a definite win for both parties."

AIT's High Performance Computing Group's full-time staff, along with graduate research assistants, post-doctoral students, and visiting scholars, conducts externally funded research. The HPC Group also helps faculty, staff, and students effectively use HPC facilities by assisting with selection or development of efficient algorithms, code parallelization, code debugging, program optimization, porting codes and relevant training.

Cray is a provider of supercomputing solutions for challenging scientific and engineering problems. For more information, go to www.cray.com.
