ISU DESIGN STUDENTS CREATE ART WITH A STEAMROLLER

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University art and design students will haul out the heavy machinery to complete a printmaking project on Friday, Oct. 25.

Students will use a steamroller to create large-scale prints on oversized woodblocks.

In their relief printmaking class, the students have carved designs on 4-foot-by-8-foot plywood blocks. On Friday, the students will create prints from the woodblocks using a steamroller donated by Manatt's Inc., Ames.

The steamroller printmaking will take place at Rueter's, a construction and equipment dealer at 5815 W. Lincoln Way. It will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The students will lay the cut blocks on the ground and roll them with ink. A large sheet of paper will be laid over each block. The paper will then be covered with a canvas blanket. Another piece of wood will be placed atop the canvas. Students will drive the steamroller over their print blocks to create relief prints.

April Katz, assistant professor of art and design, teaches the printmaking course and oversees the project.

The project teaches students how to work with large-scale imagery and shows alternative ways of making art, Katz said.

"The project shows students a different model of how artists can function," Katz said. "The group work for designing and carving, and the cooperative effort required for printing incorporate a community-based process of art-making."

There will be four, 4-by-8 woodblocks created by Katz' students and members of the University Print Society. In addition, two students will make prints on their own 4-by-4 woodblocks.
