ENGINEERING PLANTS FOR ENHANCED NUTRITION IS FOCUS OF SEPT. 18 TALK

AMES, Iowa -- Dean DellaPenna, a plant biochemist at Michigan State University, East Lansing, will speak on "Engineering Plants for Enhanced Nutrition: A Role for Nutritional Genomics," at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18. The presentation will be in rooms 171-179 of the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus. It is free and open to the public.

DellaPena is internationally known for his work on understanding and manipulating the synthesis of antioxidants--like vitamin E and beta-carotene--in plants to improve human health. He is a vocal proponent for engineering the nutritional content of agricultural crops to provide a more balanced and healthful diet in both developed and developing countries.

DellaPenna's talk is the keynote address for the 2002 fall seminar series, "Plant Products and Human Health," sponsored by the Graduate Student Organization of Plant Physiologists and the interdepartmental plant physiology major in cooperation with the food science and human nutrition department and the Plant Sciences Institute.
