CAREER CONFERENCES SET FOR OCTOBER AND APRIL

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Program for Women in Science and Engineering has scheduled this year's career conferences, "Taking the Road Less Traveled."

The annual conferences -- which give female junior high and high school students a chance to explore non-traditional careers in math, science, engineering and technology -- will be Oct. 3 and 10 for grades 6-9, and Oct. 17, for grades 9-12. The conferences will also be held April 3, 2003, for grades 9-12, and April 10 and 17, 2003, for grades 6-9.

"This is a great opportunity for young women," said PWSE conference coordinator Linda Dutton. The conference shows young women a variety of non-traditional career options and offers strategies for success, she added.

Nearly 23,000 students have attended "Taking the Road Less Traveled" during its existence. Dutton said the average number of girls per conference is 650, and that because of space limitations, hundreds of students are turned away each year. Each conference includes women professionals in various science and technical fields who speak about their careers and encourage participants to reach for their potential.

Fall registration forms are available at: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~pwse_info/HTML/careerconferences.html. For more information, contact Linda Dutton, PWSE, 104 Lab of Mechanics, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, 50011; call (515) 294-5319; or email ldutton@iastate.edu.
