STUDENT SPIRIT WEEK AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY HIGHLIGHTS VOLUNTEERISM, SCHOOL SPIRIT

AMES, Iowa -- Community service projects and a fund-raising competition with the student body at the University of Iowa will highlight "Cyclone Spirit Week," Sept. 9-14, on the Iowa State University campus.

Coordinated by offices in ISU's division of student affairs, the week is intended to promote both positive school spirit and the practice of giving -- of time and resources -- among Iowa State students. The week includes Unity Day (students are asked to wear cardinal and gold clothing) on Monday; memorial events on Wednesday commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks; "healthy spirit" day on Thursday, focusing on healthy lifestyle choices and safety issues; and Cyclone Spirit day on Friday, which will feature an after-class Cyclone trivia contest in the Memorial Union M-Shop (3-5 p.m.) and a dance and karaoke party from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall.

Small teams of ISU student volunteers will take part in community service projects around Ames on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7. Their efforts will be part of "Into the Streets," a national program of the Campus Outreach Opportunity League to introduce college students to community service. The goal at Iowa State is to recruit 200 to 250 students who each will volunteer for at least one hour. On Sept. 10, the student teams will gather to talk about their experiences.

Sept. 11 memorial events include 10 minutes of silence at noon, followed by a carillon performance by ISU carillonneur Tin-shi Tam and a program on the west steps of Curtiss Hall; and an 8 p.m. candlelight vigil around the shore of Lake LaVerne. The Memorial Union's Great Hall, South Ballroom and Sun Room will be open all day. Visitors may record their thoughts on a journal wall, watch network broadcasts about the anniversary or view artwork and live performances that reflect on the terrorist attacks.

Throughout Cyclone Spirit Week, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at various campus locations, ISU Dance Marathon leaders will be asking for cash donations from students. The "Penny Drive" is a competition with students at the University of Iowa to benefit the Children's Miracle Network. Dance marathons in November on the two campuses benefit the same organization.

Another student competition during the week is a banner contest. Residence hall floors, Greek houses and student organizations are being encouraged to create a poster with a positive, Cyclone school spirit message. Banners are due by noon Thursday, Sept. 12, and will be displayed and judged during the Friday evening dance. The winning group receives a pizza party.

The Penny Drive challenge winner also will be announced during the dance, and the spirit week grand prize will be awarded: four tickets to the Iowa State-Iowa football game the next afternoon and a roundtrip, substance-free limousine ride to Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.
