IOWA STATE'S PAPPAJOHN CENTER AWARDED $50,000 GRANT FOR STUDENT EXPERIENCES IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship has been awarded two grants totaling $50,000 by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Kansas City, Mo.

Judi Eyles, associate director of the Pappajohn Center, said $10,000 of the money will be used to expand the center's entrepreneur internship program. The program, created in 1997, was initially funded through a grant from the Kauffman Foundation and was endowed in 2000 by Roy and Bobbi Reiman, long-time supporters of Iowa State.

"More than 100 Iowa State students have participated as interns through the Reiman Scholars in Entrepreneurship," Eyles said.

The remaining $40,000 will involve Iowa State's entrepreneurship center as part of the Kauffman Foundation's newest initiative, the Kauffman Collegiate Entrepreneurs Network, she said.

"The grant allows the center to consolidate and focus its internship and learning laboratories into an experience-based program that offers start-up technology companies valuable and needed resources," Eyles said. "It also benefits faculty through interaction with the business community.

"Every semester, student interns tell us that the experience is one of the most valuable aspects of their education at Iowa State," Eyles continued. "This grant will allow us to restructure our learning programs and involve more students and faculty in the start-up process."

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation works with partners to encourage entrepreneurship across America and to improve the education of youths. The late entrepreneur and philanthropist established the Kauffman Foundation in the mid-1960s. For more information on the foundation, visit www.emkf.org.

The ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship was established through a gift in 1996 from John and Mary Pappajohn, Des Moines. It is affiliated with Iowa State's College of Business. For more information on the center, visit www.isupjcenter.org.
