ISU PRESIDENT GEOFFROY TO KICK OFF ANNUAL STUDENT ENTREPRENEURSHIP EVENT ON SEPT. 3

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy will kick off the annual student Entrepreneur Extravaganza at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union.

Geoffroy will talk about the future of entrepreneurship education at Iowa State during the event, which introduces the university community to the Entrepreneur Club, its activities and programs.

Entrepreneur education is a major part of ISU's learning environment. Last academic year, more than 2,000 students participated in programs offered by the Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship. And, up to 100 students annually participate in entrepreneur-based experiences with a company or lab at the ISU Research Park, where the Pappajohn Center is housed.

Iowa State began offering an interdisciplinary minor in entrepreneurship in 1998. About 300 students take two core courses in entrepreneurship each year from every college. Currently, more than 50 students have declared an entrepreneurship minor.

The Entrepreneurship Club impacts about 150 undergraduate and graduate students who participate in activities such as the National Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization and service-related projects, or organize business seminars.

At the kick-off event, Geoffroy will discuss the initial phase of creating an Entrepreneurial Learning Community on campus. Iowa State plans to have the program in place for fall 2004.

An organizing committee is looking for students to become involved in the planning phase. For more information, contact Judi Eyles, associate director of the Pappajohn Center, at (515) 296-6532 or by e-mail at eyles@iastate.edu.
