ISU PROFESSOR ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT OF AMERICAN OIL CHEMISTS' SOCIETY

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University faculty member Lawrence Johnson has been elected vice president of the American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS). Johnson is a professor of food science and human nutrition, and director of the Center for Crops Utilization Research.

The AOCS is an international society with 4,500 members who work with fats and oils and other related materials used for both edible and non-edible purposes.

Johnson will assume the AOCS presidency next year.

Johnson joined the Iowa State faculty in 1985. His research focuses on the development of value-added productsfood, feed and industrial processesand processes for corn and soybeans.

Johnson holds 10 patents and is the author of nearly 100 research publications, 55 proceedings and 17 books or book chapters. In 1999, he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry. Johnson has been active in several professional organizations and was elected to the AOCS board in 1996.

The Center for Crops Utilization Research is a research center in the Plant Sciences Institute and the Colleges of Agriculture and Family and Consumer Sciences.
