SCHOLAR ON MEN AND MASCULINITY TO SPEAK AT IOWA STATE

AMES, Iowa -- Michael Kimmel, a sociologist and author who has received international recognition for his work on men and masculinity, will speak at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12, in Curtiss Auditorium at Iowa State University. Kimmel's talk is titled, "Mars and Venus, Or Planet Earth: Women and Men In A New Millennium."

Kimmel, a professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, is a well-known authority on gender issues. Kimmel's most recent book, "The Gendered Society," has been called a touchstone for courses in gender studies. He has co-edited the textbook, "Men's Lives," which is used in most courses on men and masculinity in the country.

Kimmel's work has appeared in the New York Times, the Nation and the Washington Post. He has lectured extensively and has run workshops on preventing sexual harassment and implementing gender equity, date and acquaintance rape, sexual assault, pornography, and the changing relations between women and men.
