LEADING CHINESE PAINTER TO TEACH ISU WORKSHOP, JUNE 16-27

AMES, Iowa -- Renowned Chinese painter Li Aiguo will teach a painting workshop at Iowa State University, June 16-27. The workshop will be on gong bi hua, a type of traditional Chinese, realistic painting that involves special paper and inks made of animal, vegetable and mineral compounds.

Li is a professor of art at Capital Normal University, Beijing, director of the Gong Bi Painting Society of China.

One of the leading young painters in China today, Li specializes in gong bi hua and in contemporary painting using traditional papers and inks. He has won several awards, and his works are a part of collections at China's National Art Museum and National Military Museum. He is the author of several books, including "Painting Horses," "Sketch, Creation and Style" and "Gong Bi Painting Techniques."

The workshop will be from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the College of Design's private painting studio, room 246. It will include lectures, multimedia presentations, hands-on painting (from life, with a partially nude model) and individual instruction in the history, methods, materials and composition of gong bi hua. Li will bring the paper and ink materials with him from China because they are unavailable in the United States.

Participants may earn three undergraduate or graduate credits, enroll for the non-credit option or earn eight continuing education units (CEUs). ISU students can register online at http://www.public.iastate.edu/~registrar/registration/ and must pay tuition. For CEUs or non-credit, the fee is $200, which includes most materials. To register for CEUs or for non-credit, call ISU Continuing Education and Communication Services, 294-6222. For additional information about the workshop, contact Chiu-Shui Chan, 294-8326.
