ANOTHER CANDIDATE FOR NEW INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY POSITION TO VISIT CAMPUS

A fifth candidate for the new Iowa State University position of chief information officer (CIO) will visit campus Dec. 2-3.

James W. Johnson, formerly vice president for computing and information technology and CIO at Wayne State University, Detroit, will present a public talk on "A Vision for Computing and Information Technologies and a View on Diversity at an Academic Institution" from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium in Howe Hall Dec 2.

Johnson was at Wayne State from 1998 to 2003. He also has served as vice provost for information technology at Emory University, Atlanta, Ga., (1988-1998), and vice president for computing at University of Houston (1985-1988). Over a 13-year span at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, he held a number of positions, including director of the information technology office and CIO (1982-85).

He received an A. B. from Knox College of Economics (1964), and an MBA in economics from University of Illinois (1966).

The chief information officer will oversee information technology services, special projects and new initiatives for the university. The leadership position is expected to result in more efficient coordination among the university's technology units, some long-term cost savings and increased alignment of information technology services and infrastructure with the strategic goals of Iowa State.
