DEADLINE TO ENTER 2003 PAPPAJOHN NEW VENTURE BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION IS OCT. 24

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa college and university students interested in competing in the 2003 Pappajohn New Venture Business Plan Competition must submit an "intent to compete" form with one of five regional Pappajohn Centers for Entrepreneurship by Friday, Oct. 24.

Sponsored by Iowa entrepreneur John Pappajohn and Equity Dynamics, Inc., the competition is for students interested in starting their own businesses. Business plans will be judged on content and viability. Seed grants worth $5,000 each will be awarded for the top three business plans submitted and presented.

Full or part-time Iowa undergraduate and graduate students may compete. Plans may be submitted individually or by a team. Teams must include at least one student member and may be no larger than five members. Plans must be for a start-up business, not an existing business.

Completed applications are due by 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24. A description of the planned use of the $5,000 is to be included.

Judging will occur the week of Nov. 24 at each regional center. Each center will select no more than three top business plans to compete in the final competition. The second round will be judged from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in Des Moines. Those submitting winning plans from each of the five centers will provide oral presentations to John Pappajohn and his staff. An awards presentation will follow.

Besides Iowa State's Pappajohn Center, the other four centers are at the University of Iowa, Iowa City; the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls; Drake University, Des Moines; and North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City.

John and Mary Pappajohn, Des Moines, fund the business plan competition.
