METROPOLIS MAGAZINE EDITOR TO DISCUSS DESIGN OCT. 9 AT ISU

AMES, Iowa -- Susan Szenasy, chief editor of Metropolis, the New York City-based magazine of architecture, design and culture, will present "The Next 25 Years: Changes in Design and Design Education," 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Sun Room, Memorial Union, Iowa State University.

Szenasy's (pronounced suh NAH see) presentation is the keynote address in a yearlong celebration of the College of Design's 25th anniversary.

In 1986, Szenasy was named chief editor of Metropolis (www.metropolismag.com). The magazine examines design--from graphics to architecture--in the context of contemporary life. Under her leadership, the magazine has gained international recognition and won numerous awards.

Szenasy also teaches design history and ethics at Parsons School of Design, New York City. She is the author of several books on design, including "The Home: Exciting New Designs for Today's Lifestyles" and "Light: The Complete Handbook of Lighting Design."

Szenasy is a frequent lecturer and panel moderator on broad ranging design topics. She is co-founder of R.Dot (Rebuild Downtown Our Town), a coalition of New Yorkers formed after the 9/11 tragedies to contribute expertise to building the 21st century metropolis at the site of the former World Trade Center.

Szenasy holds a master's degree in modern European history from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. In May, she received an honorary doctorate of arts from Kendall College of Art and Design, Grand Rapids, Mich.

The lecture is sponsored by the College of Design and the ISU Lectures Program, which is funded by the Government of the Student Body.

The College of Design's Silver Anniversary celebration will feature notable speakers and special exhibitions throughout the year. Information on upcoming events is available at www.design.iastate.edu, then click on 25th Anniversary.
