ALEXANDER NAMED ISU DIRECTOR OF RESIDENCE

AMES, Iowa -- Randy Alexander, director of university housing at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, has been appointed the new director of residence at Iowa State.

Alexander has been at the University of Wisconsin since 1991, where he was responsible for all aspects of the university housing program, including residence life, business operations and facilities.

He also served as director of housing at Wichita State University (1980-90), Wichita, Kan.; director of residential living at Southwest Texas State University (1978-80), San Marcos; and assistant dean of student development at Stephen F. Austin State University (1976-78), Nacogdoches, Texas.

He received a B.A. in psychology in 1973 and an M.S. in student personnel and guidance in 1974, both from East Texas State University, Commerce.

"Randy has an excellent history of working with several residence systems and has provided leadership on facility renovations. He also clearly believes in involving the academic community with students in their residence setting," said Thomas Thielen, vice president for student affairs. "We are glad that he has joined our team.

"As the new residence system director, Randy's challenge during the next few years will be to modify some of our traditional halls to better meet the physical and educational needs of students in the '90s and beyond," Thielen said.

Alexander will begin his new duties Aug. 1. His salary will be $96,000.

He succeeds Charles Frederiksen, who has led the department of residence since 1967 and been on the residence staff since 1956. Frederiksen will retire June 30. A retirement reception for Frederiksen will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, June 28, in the Knapp-Storms Commons at the Towers Residence Halls.

Virginia Arthur, assistant director of residence, will serve as interim director of residence during July.
