PRESIDENT OF TELLABS INC. NAMED FIRST

EXECUTIVE-IN-RESIDENCE AT ISU BUSINESS COLLEGE

AMES, Iowa -- Michael Birck, president, CEO and founder of Tellabs Inc., Lisle, Ill., has been selected as the first executive-in-residence at Iowa State University's College of Business. Birck will make a presentation during an open forum Tuesday, March 19, at

4 p.m. in the ISU Memorial Union Oak Room. A reception will follow in the Campanile Room.

The executive-in-residence program is designed to bring top senior-level business leaders to campus to interact with students, faculty, staff and administrators. Visiting business leaders will share professional experiences, give overviews of their industries and provide an external perspective on the college's programs.

Birck has served as president and CEO of Tellabs Inc., since 1975. Tellabs is a telecommunications equipment manufacturer.

In 1984, Birck received the Illinois High Tech Entrepreneur award from Peat Marwick and Mitchell/Crain's Chicago Business. He was awarded the Outstanding Master Entrepreneur award by Inc. Magazine and Ernst & Young in 1995. Birck serves as a director of the Purdue University Research Foundation and as a member of the Board of Directors of Duplex Products Inc., USF&G Corp. and Molex Inc.

Birck received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., and an M.S. degree in electrical engineering from New York University, New York City. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Engineering by Purdue in 1995.
