ISU STUDENT CHARGED WITH
FILING FALSE REPORT OF ASSAULT

AMES, Iowa--DeAntrious R. Mitchell, 20, 4422 Friley Hall, Iowa State University, was arrested at 1:35 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 1996, by Iowa State University Department of Public Safety officers on a charge of "false reports to public safety entities," a serious misdemeanor under the Iowa Code.

The charge was filed by the Story County Attorney's Office as a result of an investigation into Mitchell's report that he was assaulted by a group of at least eight white males on the west side of the ISU campus Oct. 18. Investigators said Mitchell confessed to filing a false report.

The investigation involved ISU DPS, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Story County Attorney's Office and the Iowa Medical Examiner's Office.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of a fine of up to $1,000 and imprisonment of up to one year. Bond was set at $650.
