ISU VP FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS THIELEN TO RETIRE

AMES, Iowa--Tom Thielen, vice president for student affairs at Iowa State University since 1977, has announced that he will leave that position effective Dec. 31. Thielen, 62, will remain on the faculty in ISU's Department of Professional Studies in Education through the spring semester and will retire May 31, 1997.

Thielen said he "feels very good" about the student affairs division at Iowa State. "All of the leadership positions in the division have been filled with outstanding people," Thielen said, "and we have in place or under construction some of the best facilities for students at any major university in the nation." Recent facility improvements for students include the Lied Recreation Center, renovation of the Memorial Union, the new Student Health Center, which is scheduled for completion in May, and future renovations of the Student Services Building and residence halls.

"The tradition of active student involvement in campus life and leadership development is alive and well today, and I believe it will continue strong in the future," Thielen said, "so the time just seemed right for me to move my life in a new direction."

ISU President Martin Jischke said, "Iowa State has benefited greatly from Tom's 20 years of leadership in identifying and meeting the needs of students. He is a nationally recognized leader in student affairs, and it has been a pleasure to work with him. I wish him well in his retirement."

Thielen was vice provost for student affairs at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, from 1973 to 1976 and dean of student services at the University of Maine from 1970 to 1973. He received the B.S. in 1957 from Mankato State University, the M.S. in 1964 from the University of Wyoming, and the Ed.D. in 1970 from Indiana University.

Jischke said an interim vice president will be appointed before Dec. 31, and a national search will be conducted for a successor.
