ISU'S PAPPAJOHN CENTER AWARDED GRANT

AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State University Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship has been awarded the 1997 Kauffman Entrepreneur Internship Program grant from the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Inc. The $50,000 grant will establish 15 new summer internships at the Pappajohn Center.

"This grant presents a tremendous opportunity for the Pappajohn Center and the students of Iowa State, " said Judi Nielsen, Pappajohn Center program director. "These new internships will enable students to gain valuable hands-on experience in entrepreneurial companies."

The internships will be geared toward the agriculture, engineering and veterinary medicine fields, but will be offered to both undergraduate and graduate students from all ISU colleges.

Students will complete the internships in start up and early stage companies. They will work directly with business owners, assisting them with the many challenges that face growing companies, said Nielsen.

The Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Inc., Kansas City, Mo., is an independent, not-for-profit educational organization funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Kauffman, a businessman and entrepreneur, established the center in 1992 to further entrepreneurship in America.

The ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship was funded by a $1 million gift from John Pappajohn and his wife, Mary. The center is designed to help entrepreneurs, technologists, and ISU faculty and students develop ideas and technologies into new businesses or expand existing companies. The center also provides educational courses, programs and outreach services to develop the entrepreneurial interests of Iowa State students, faculty and other Iowans. The Pappajohn gift is part of Campaign Destiny, ISU's capital fundraising effort.
