SHAPIRO NAMED NEW ASSISTANT DEAN OF ENGINEERING

AMES, Iowa -- Howard Shapiro, professor of mechanical engineering at Iowa State University, has been appointed assistant dean of engineering for undergraduate programs. His three-year appointment began Jan. 1.

Shapiro will implement plans, strategies and tactics to accomplish college goals and objectives for undergraduate programs. He will supervise the Engineering Classification Office, Engineering Computer Support Services and Engineering Student Services.

"Howard Shapiro brings to this job a unique set of qualifications ranging from his service on the Ames School Board to in-depth involvement with ISU's Project LEAR/N, a teaching enhancement program," said Engineering Dean James Melsa. "We're asking him to take a leadership position in making changes to both the content and methodology of our undergraduate engineering programs."

Shapiro earned his bachelor's (1969), master's (1971) and doctoral (1975) degrees from Ohio State University, Columbus. He joined Iowa State as assistant professor in 1975 and became a full professor in 1989. Since 1990, Shapiro has directed the ISU Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Center and has been co-director of ISU's Center for Building Energy Research since 1991.

Shapiro teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering thermodynamics. He has conducted research in the areas of energy efficiency in industrial processes, thermodynamics and energy conversion. A highly regarded teacher, Shapiro has received many awards for his work in the classroom, including an ISU Excellence in Teaching Award (1991), and a Regents' Award for Faculty Excellence (1992). He was named the Mechanical Engineering Seniors' Professor of the Year in 1994.

Active in the Ames community, Shapiro has been an elected member of the Ames School Board since 1988 and served as its president from 1993 until 1995.
