JACK TRICE STATUE TO BE MOVED TO SITE NEAR STADIUM

AMES, Iowa -- The Jack Trice sculpture on the Iowa State University campus will be moved to a site near the Cyclones' football field that bears his name.

The statue will be removed from its site between Beardshear and Carver halls on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and shipped to Connecticut for maintenance. Upon completion, the sculpture will be located this summer on the lawn east of the Olsen Building.

University officials accepted the recommendation of ISU's Government of the Student Body, which voted unanimously in October to move the bronze sculpture to a location near Cyclone Stadium-Jack Trice Field. GSB senators want the statue relocated near the stadium to increase its visibility, said GSB President Adam Gold.

"We're very happy with the move," Gold said. "Making the statue more visible is a great way to honor Jack Trice."

Trice was Iowa State's first African America student-athlete. A lineman on the football team, he died from injuries sustained in a game at Minnesota in 1923.

The statue, which has some exterior deterioration, will be conserved by Linda Merk-Gould, Westport, Conn. She will stabilize the damaged areas and treat the exterior to prevent further deterioration. Merk-Gould has worked on other ISU sculptures, including the Fountain of the Four Seasons at the Memorial Union and the Gentle Doctor statue.

The cost for conservation, relocation and landscaping is estimated at $35,000. GSB will pay one-third of the cost and ISU will pay the remainder.

Commissioned by GSB, the statue was cast in 1986 and 1987 by Christopher Bennett and installed on campus in May 1988. The six-foot, six-inch-high sculpture is estimated to weigh 1,000 pounds.
