GIFTS WILL FUND IMPROVEMENTS IN VET MED COLLEGE, LIBRARY

AMES, Iowa --A $150,000 gift to the University Library and the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University will fund improvements to the college's library and pay for non- library equipment purchases.

To be distributed over five years, the gift comes from the Mansfield Foundation, Belle Plaine. About $107,000 will purchase items such as computer stations, a computer disk drive for electronic data storage and books for the library's collection. Also included is funding to allow a staff librarian to visit veterinary and ISU extension offices to promote the library's resources among practicing veterinarians. Another $43,000 will purchase surgical equipment for the teaching hospital, and computer equipment to assist faculty in developing interactive teaching software.

The Vet Med library also recently received a $90,000 gift from the estate of H. Hugh and Mary Dukes, who were Des Moines residents. About $75,000 is in an endowment and the remainder will be used to purchase electronic reference databases and periodicals.

H. Hugh Dukes received his DVM degree from Iowa State in 1918 and was on the faculty from 1921 to 1932 and again for several years during the 1960s. He died in 1987; Mary Dukes died last spring.
