ISU GRADUATE NAMED INTERIM DIRECTOR OF AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES

AMES, Iowa -- Valerie Grim, associate professor in Indiana University's department of Afro American studies, has been appointed interim director of African American studies at Iowa State University. Grim is a visiting professor in ISU's history department.

Grim earned her master's and Ph.D. from Iowa State in 1986 and 1990, respectively. She has done extensive research on the African American experience in agriculture, particularly in the South. She is researching Iowa's African American agricultural heritage for a chapter of a book examining the black experience in the state.

Grim will play an active role in the hiring of a permanent director for ISU's African American studies program.
