NEW FINALIST FOR ISU STUDENT AFFAIRS V.P. ANNOUNCED

AMES, Iowa -- Mark Shanley, dean of student affairs at Truman State University, Kirksville, Mo., has been announced as a finalist for the position of Iowa State University vice president for student affairs.

A previously announced candidate, David Meabon, vice president for student affairs, University of Toledo, Ohio, has withdrawn from consideration.

The new vice president will succeed Thomas Thielen, who retired Dec. 31, 1996.

Shanley has been dean of student affairs at Truman State University (formerly Northeast Missouri State University) since 1993. Previously, he served as assistant vice president for student affairs/dean of student development at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, from 1985 to 1993; director of student development at USC from 1982 to 1985; associate dean of student affairs at USC from 1979 to 1982; and director of student activities at Youngstown State University, Ohio, from 1975 to 1979. Shanley has written on student-affairs related issues, including the freshman year experience. He received a B.A. in psychology from the University of Cincinatti, Ohio, in 1973; an M.S.E. in college student personnel administration from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1974; and a Ed.D. in higher education administration from the USC in 1987.

Shanley will have an open forum from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the Oak Room of the Memorial Union.

The other finalists for the position of vice president for student affairs are: Linda Kuk, vice president for student affairs, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York; Barbara Hancock Snyder, vice chancellor for student affairs, University of Nebraska, Kearney; Thomas Hill, dean for student services, University of Florida, Gainesville; Randy Hyman, associate vice president for student affairs, Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.; and Edward Whipple, vice president for student affairs, Bowling Green State University, Ohio.

Kuk, Snyder and Hill already have visited campus. Open forums for the other finalists are as follows.
