TASK FORCE WILL STUDY WAYS TO MAKE AMES COMMUNITY MORE INVITING TO MINORITIES

AMES, Iowa -- The Ames Chamber of Commerce, the City of Ames and Iowa State University are joining together to find ways to make the Ames community more inviting to a diverse population. A task force has been set up to guide this effort said Linda Dasher, chair of the Ames-ISU Planning Task Force, "Breaking Down the Barriers."

"The task force will study, plan and make recommendations concerning consumer and law enforcement issues minorities have in Ames," Dasher said. "We want to look at what we can do as a community to make all people feel more at home in Ames."

In addition to Dasher, task force members are Larry Curtis, mayor, Ames; Dennis Ballentine, chief of police, Ames; Steve Schainker, city manager, Ames; Felicia Anthony, executive administrator, Green Hills Retirement Community, Ames; Terri Morrison, consumer banking manager, Norwest Bank Iowa NA, Ames; Nick Johns, superintendent, Ames Community Schools; Murray Blackwelder, vice president of external affairs, ISU; Dan Robinson, interim vice president of student affairs, ISU; Loras Jaeger, director of public safety, ISU; and Rafael Rodriguez, director of minority student affairs, ISU.

Dasher said the first meeting of the task force will be Wednesday, Feb. 12, 4 - 5:30 p.m., in room 233 of the Ames City Hall.
