UPDATE ON IOWA STATE SOLAR CAR STUDENTS
AMES, Iowa -- Three Iowa State University students remain hospitalized at Stormont Vail Regional Medical Center, Topeka, Kan. All three of the students reportedly have stable conditions and rested through the night.
Karla Abrahamson and Andrew Earhart are listed in serious condition. Brian Galvin is listed in fair condition.
Yesterday morning, 10 Iowa State students were traveling in a van pulling a trailer with the Iowa State solar car when it experienced difficulties and swerved off Interstate 335, six miles south of Topeka. The van eventually hit a fence and several trees before coming to a stop. All of the ten students were taken to two area hospitals. Seven were treated and released yesterday.
A total of 18 ISU students were traveling in a two-vehicle caravan when the accident occurred. They were returning from Mesa, Ariz., where they participated in qualifying competition for Sunrayce 97, a biennial solar car race.
James Hill, professor of chemical engineering and the faculty advisor to Team PrISUm, and Thomas Ligouri, director of external relations for ISU's College of Engineering, spent the night in Topeka to help the students and make arrangements for their return.
