DOUGHARTY NAMED ASSOCIATE DEAN OF STUDENTS AT ISU

W. Houston Dougharty, coordinator of sexual harassment prevention education and a learning skills counselor for the University of California, Santa Barbara, has been named associate dean of students at Iowa State University. Dougharty begins his duties on March 1.

As associate dean of students, Dougharty will oversee the office's advocacy area, which helps students resolve problems and find answers to questions; the ISU Parent's Association; and student services for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. He also will have general duties in the Dean of Students Office.

Dougharty has given hundreds of workshops and lectures throughout his career on students affairs issues, including multiculturalism, sexual harassment and making the transition to college. He also is an instructor for an interdisciplinary studies course and a teacher certification course at UCSB.

Dougharty earned a B.A. in English literature in 1983 from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, a master's in student personnel administration from Western Washington University, Bellingham, and a master's in educational leadership and organizations from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

He served as associate director of admission and student financial assistance at the University of Hartford from 1986-1987. He also has been in various counseling and advising positions at several universities.

Dougharty succeeds Doug Houghton, former assistant dean of students, who is now the program coordinator for the Department of Public Safety Parking Division.
