ISU FALL ENROLLMENT UP BY NEARLY 500 STUDENTS

AMES, Iowa -- Driven by a significant increase in undergraduate students, Iowa State's fall enrollment is up 485 or nearly 2 percent compared to fall semester 1996.

A total of 25,384 students have enrolled for the current semester, compared to 24,899 last year. The 1997 enrollment figure includes 21,124 undergraduate students, 621 more than last year. In 1996, undergraduate enrollment grew by 160.

"Enrollment growth like this is the direct result of a university- wide effort that involves faculty, staff and the student body, as well as Iowa State alumni across the globe," said Thomas Hill, vice president for student affairs.

Graduate enrollment is 4,260, which is down 136 from last year..

Minority enrollment for fall is 1,678, which is a decrease from last fall's minority enrollment of 1,703. Minority students make up 6.61 percent of Iowa State's total fall enrollment. Though total minority enrollment declined, the number of new minority undergraduates at Iowa State has increased by 15, said Hill.

International student enrollment is 2,564, a slight decrease from last year's enrollment of 2,566. International students make up 10 percent of Iowa State's total fall enrollment.

Highlights of this year's enrollment:

• Enrollment is more than 25,000 for the first time since 1993 and the highest it has been since 1989 (25,489).

• Freshmen enrollment is 4,006. The last time freshman enrollment has exceeded 4,000 was 1985.

• Freshmen enrollment is up nearly 11 percent for both in-state and out-of-state.

• Iowans make up 75 percent of the freshmen class.
