ISU'S HOFFMAN NAMED PROVOST AT UIC

AMES, Iowa -- Elizabeth "Betsy" Hoffman, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has appointed provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at The University of Illinois at Chicago.

"We greatly appreciate Dean Hoffman's dedication and the leadership she has provided to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences," said President Martin Jischke. "In her four years, she has made a significant contribution to Iowa State and she will be remembered for that. We congratulate her on her appointment to The University of Illinois at Chicago and wish her continued success."

"This is a great opportunity. UIC is an urban campus with one of the country's largest medical centers," said Hoffman, who has been LAS dean since July 1993.

During her tenure as dean, private funds raised in Liberal Arts and Sciences more than tripled; contracts and grants increased signficantly; and several new degree pro-grams were created, including performing arts, environmental science and women's studies. In addition, more senior faculty began teaching freshmen level courses.

Hoffman, an active researcher in the field of experimental economics, also holds the rank of professor of economics and psychology at ISU. She taught principles of economics and freshmen composition courses.

During her tenure, the college was moved to its current location in recently renovated Carrie Chapman Catt Hall.

"Elizabeth Hoffman has done a fine job over the last four years as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences," Provost John Kozak said. "She has certainly made an impact. We wish her well in her new position as provost at The University of Illinois at Chicago."

Prior to coming to ISU, Hoffman was at the University of Arizona, where she began in 1988 as a professor of economics and law. In 1989, she was appointed associate dean of the Karl Eller Graduate School of Management and program director for the master of business administration.
