FRED HOIBERG NAMED 1997 IOWA GAMES TORCH BEARER

AMES, Iowa -- Fred Hoiberg, former Cyclone basketball star who now plays professionally for the Indiana Pacers, will serve as the 1997 Iowa Games celebrity torch bearer. The Iowa Games will be at Iowa State University, Aug. 1-3.

The announcement was made Monday, May 5, at a press conference held at the capitol building in Des Moines. Hoiberg, a native of Ames, will attend Iowa Games' opening ceremonies, which traditionally kick off the weekend. Opening Ceremonies will be held Friday, August 1, at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, beginning at 8 p.m.

The event is free of charge.

This year's Iowa Games offer 36 sports, including the addition of table tennis and squash. Entry forms and participant handbooks are available at Hy-Vee Food Stores, Brenton Banks, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa service centers, Casey's General Stores, park and recreation departments, 4 Sons, Heartland Pantry's, YMCAs and YWCAs.
