TEAM PRISUM QUALIFIES FOR SUNRAYCE 97

AMES, Iowa -- Team PrISUm, Iowa State University's solar car team, has qualified for Sunrayce 97 and will race its ExCYtor car beginning June 19. Iowa State has the 34th position in a field of 36 cars for Sunrayce 97.

"We're excited and very happy that we qualified for the race," said Team PrISUm director Beth Hunter. "The car ran great and now we're ready to race."

In order to qualify for Sunrayce 97, the Iowa State solar car team had to prove its car met specific safety and performance requirements. It also had to maintain an average speed of 25 mph for 100 miles on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. ExCYtor met all of these requirements.

Sunrayce 97 will coincide with the week of the summer solstice. The race begins in Indianapolis on June 19 and ends 1,230 miles later in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 28. It will pass through Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado.

Sunrayce 97 has specific beginning and ending points for each day of the race. The first leg of Sunrayce 97 on June 19 will be from Indianapolis to Terre Haute, Ind., a relatively short distance of 65 miles.

Sunrayce is an ongoing educational program that culminates in a biennial cross-country race of solar powered cars. The program is open to colleges, universities, trade schools and other post-secondary educational institutions.
