ISU WINS SAFETY AWARD

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University was awarded a safety award from the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council for the eighth consecutive year. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in accident prevention during 1996.

To receive the award, ISU has to have an accident incidence rate lower than the average of other education service organizations. The accident incidence rate for ISU was 2.7 per 100 full time employees in 1996 and the national average was 4.2.

"Everything we do in environmental health and safety (EHS) is directed toward the ultimate goal of an accident incidence rate of zero," said Emery Sobottka, ISU director of environmental health and safety. EHS develops safety manuals and guidelines, gives safety training programs, and conducts audits and safety inspections.

ISU was one of 220 Iowa businesses, industries and government agencies to receive an award for promoting active safety programs and reducing OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) recordable injuries among their employees.

The Iowa-Illinois Safety Council is a not-for-profit public service organization which tries to educate and influence society to adopt safety and health policies.
