ISU SOLAR CAR TEAM HEADS TO ARIZONA FOR QUALIFIERS

AMES, Iowa -- Team PrISUm, the Iowa State University solar car team, is heading to Mesa, Ariz., for the Sunrayce 97 qualifiers.

ExCYtor, ISU's new solar car, will go through a series of static and dynamic tests from April 25 to 27 to prove its safety features and road worthiness. If ExCYtor passes the initial tests, it will participate in the road qualifier, which includes maintaining a speed of 25 miles per hour for two hours.

"We hope to be in one of the top five qualifying positions," said Beth Hunter, director of Team PrISUm.

Sunrayce 97, a cross-country solar-car race, will begin June 19 in Indianapolis and end June 28 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Team PrISUm members leave Ames on Tuesday, April 22, and will return on April 29. Twenty team members will take part in the qualifiers.

Team PrISUm is a student organization dedicated to designing, building and racing solar cars. ExCYtor is the fourth solar car built by the student organization since 1990.
