TEAM PRISUM GEARS UP FOR SECOND PART OF SUNRAYCE 97

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Team PrISUm is in 28th place at the end of the first four days of racing. In the four days, the ExCYtor car has traveled 555 miles in 31 hours, 13 minutes and 33 seconds, including penalties, for an average speed of 18 mph.

MIT is in first place. The team completed the first four days of the race in 12 hours, 42 minutes and 50 seconds for an average speed of 43.8 mph. California State University, Los Angeles is second (average speed of 42.9 mph), and University of Waterloo, Ontario, is third (42.3 mph).

Today's off day will give all of the race teams a chance to recharge their batteries and work on strategy for the remainder of the race. Sunrayce resumes tomorrow with a 152- mile leg from Lee's Summit, Mo., to Manhattan, Kan.

"If it stays sunny today we expect to have a full tank for tomorrow's leg of the race," said Team PrISUm director Beth Hunter. "There will be a steady up hill grade all the way through to Colorado. That will be our main obstacle."

Sunrayce 97 coincides with the week of the summer solstice. The 1,230-mile race began June 19 in Indianapolis and ends June 28 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
