ISU STUDENT AFFAIRS V.P. FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

AMES, Iowa -- Six finalists have been named for the position of Iowa State University Vice President for Student Affairs.

The finalists are: Linda Kuk, vice president for student affairs, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York; Barbara Hancock Snyder, vice chancellor for student affairs, University of Nebraska, Kearney; Thomas Hill, dean for student services, University of Florida, Gainesville; Randy Hyman, associate vice president for student affairs, Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.; Edward Whipple, vice president for student affairs, Bowling Green State University, Ohio; and David Meabon, vice president for student affairs, University of Toledo, Ohio.

The new vice president will succeed Thomas Thielen, who retired December 31, 1996.

Each finalist will visit ISU in the coming weeks to interview and meet with various university groups. Each candidate also will meet with members of the university community and the public during a one-hour open forum. Following is the forum schedule.

Linda Kuk has been vice president for student affairs at the Rochester Institute of Technology since August 1993. She served as vice president for student affairs at the State University of New York, Cortland, from 1984 to 1993; dean of students at Marquette University, Wisconsin, from 1979 to 1984; assistant to 19the vice president for student affairs for communication and special programs at Iowa State University from 1978 to 1979; and coordinator of residence life at the University of Connecticut, from 1975 to 1978. Kuk has written on student affairs-related issues, including management, elimination of sexism and affirmative action. She received a Ph.D. in professional studies from Iowa State in 1981; a masters of education in student personnel and administration/counseling in 1973 and a B.A. in social work in 1972 from Colorado State University, Fort Collins. She also attended the Institute of Higher Education Management at Harvard University, Cambridge, in 1993.

Barbara Hancock Snyder has been vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Nebraska, Kearney, since 1988. She served as assistant dean for orientation and student retention in the dean of students office at Iowa State from 1985 to 1988, and held various positions in the Iowa State student life office, including orientation coordinator and career development consultant, from 1975 to 1985. Snyder is active with the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and has held various positions with the professional organization. She received a Ph.D. in professional studies/higher education management from Iowa State in 1987; an M.S. in counseling from St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, in 1975; and a B.S. in home economics/speech communication from Ohio State University, Columbus, in 1974.

Thomas Hill has been dean for student services at the University of Florida since 1993. He served as assistant athletic director for student life at the University of Oklahoma, Tulsa, from 1989 to 1993; assistant athletic director for student life at Tulane University, New Orleans, from 1985 to 1989; coordinator of University College at Arkansas State University, State University, from 1982 to 1985; and assistant academic adviser, athletic department, at the University of Florida from 1979 to 1981. Hill has written on issues related to student affairs, including student to 19athlete development and white racial identity attitudes. He received a Ph.D. in counselor education from the University of Florida in 1985; an M.S. in counselor education from C.W. Post-Long Island University, New York, in 1976; and a B.S.E. in physical education from Arkansas State University in 1972.

Randy Hyman has been associate vice president for student affairs at Ball State University since 1989. He served as associate dean of student affairs at South Dakota State University, Brookings, from 1988 to 1989; assistant dean of student affairs at South Dakota State University from 1984 to 1988; assistant director of housing for residence life at the University of Florida from 1979 to 1984; and director of housing and food service at the New College of the University of South Florida, Tampa, from 1977 to 1979. He has written on issues related to student affairs, including student outcomes assessment. He received a Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Florida in 1983; an M.Ed. in student personnel services in higher education from the University of Vermont, Burlington, in 1976; and a B.S. in speech pathology and audiology from the State University of New York, Buffalo, in 1974.

Edward Whipple has been vice president for student affairs at Bowling Green State University since 1994. He served as vice president for student affairs at Montana State University, Billings, from 1989 to 1994; director of student life in the dean of students office at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, from 1985 to 1989; and associate dean of students at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, from 1982 to 1985. He has written on issues related to student affairs, including student centers and student activities, and Greek and non-greek values and attitudes. He received the Ph.D. in college student services administration from Oregon State University, Corvallis, in 1981; an M.A.T. in English education from Northwestern University, Evanston, in 1975; and a B.A. in English from Williamette University, Salem, Ore. in 1974.

David Meabon has been vice president for student affairs at the University of Toledo since 1991. He served as associate vice president for academic affairs at Wichita State University, Kansas, from 1986 to 1991; assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of student life and services at Wichita State University from 1976 to 1986; and coordinator of programs in higher education for the University of South Carolina (Columbia) college of education from 1973 to 1976. He has written on issues related to student affairs, including financing campus activities, student market research and NCAA regulations. He received the Ph.D. in higher education administration from Florida State University, Tallahassee, in 1973; an M.Ed. in student personnel services from the University of South Carolina in 1971; and a B.S. in technical science/business administration from West Virginia State College, Institute, in 1964.
