ACTIVITIES PLANNED BY 4-H E-SET TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY WEEK

AMES, Iowa -- Young scientists throughout Iowa will participate in a variety of experiments and events as part of National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), April 26-May 2.

Activities related to the week are designed to encourage an appreciation for science and discovery, and to spark innovative ideas for the future, said Debbie Curry, director of Iowa State University's E-SET (Extension--Science, Engineering and Technology) Youth Initiative, a part of ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development.

4-H E-SET is hosting the events to demonstrate that science is not just a classroom subject but a fascinating and creative part of everyone's daily life, Curry said.

"We're all scientists," said Curry. "We're born with an innate curiosity about the world around us. If this curiosity is nurtured properly, it will grow and thrive and enrich each person's life."

ISU E-SET is part of a national network of sites hosting activities and events. E-SET and ISU county extension offices are hosting workshops for teachers and youth leaders, programs with local libraries and community family events.

Held annually since 1985, NSTW is a program of the National Science Foundation, a U.S. agency that promotes and advances scientific progress and understanding. One of the principal activities is informing citizens about how science and engineering issues affect their lives and preparing future generations of scientists and engineers.

Among NSTW activities is an opportunity for the public to have their science and technology questions answered by experts. On Wednesday, April 29, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT, persons may call toll-free 1-888-718-3026 to ask questions of scientists and engineers. In addition, persons may e-mail their questions all week to asknstw@nsf.gov.

In Iowa, Fareway Stores are highlighting NSTW. Fareway grocery bags will include instructions to conduct a simple a science experiment that answers the question, "What color is a polar bear."

For more information about E-SET and science education for youth from ISU Extension, contact Curry at (515) 294-8417 or any county ISU Extension office.

Extension programs are available to all without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age or disability.
