LIVING MURAL TO ILLUSTRATE CHANGES IN HIGHER
EDUCATION IN VISUAL, MUSICAL PROGRAM TUESDAY AFTERNOON

AMES, Iowa -- Dancing, singing and poetry will create a living mural to illustrate how higher education should change for the next century in a 1 p.m. program Tuesday, May 19, on the steps of Catt Hall at Iowa State University.

Institutional Change Viewed through Art, a 45-minute program, will feature artists and performers demonstrating ways Americas colleges and universities can change to meet the needs of the public in the next century. The program is sponsored by ISUs VISION 2020 initiative.

Its a multimedia presentation that involves music, dance, props and audience participation, along with reading and commentary, said Bill Silag, a program coordinator for VISION 2020.

The program is directed by and features Joseph Houseal, a Chicago-based choreographer, director, producer and writer. Houseal spent eight years as artistic director of Parnassus Dancetheatre, a multi-culture, multi-art performance troupe from Kyoto, Japan.

Also featured are Janice Baker and Vernon Windsor of ISUs dance program. Evelyn Jensen, an Iowa performer and artist, will sing and accompany the program.

Were using art as a way to express change in how we, in higher education, will do business in the future, said Ann Schultz, a program coordinator for VISION 2020. Specifically, were looking at changing the way ISU does the business of teaching, research and outreach from the vantage point of community colleges, businesses, government agencies, communities and Iowa citizens.

VISION 2020 is Iowas initiative in the Food Systems Professions Education (FSPE) program. FSPE challenged ISU and 12 other land-grant universities in 1993 to create a new vision for post-secondary education for the year 2020. ISU and the states community colleges have joined forces to implement plans to reach the vision in Iowa, Schultz said.

The FSPE initiative, which involves institutions in 22 states and Costa Rica, is funded in part by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Battle Creek, Mich.
