ISU HOSTS ACTIVITIES DURING ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK, OCT. 18-24

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University will take part in the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Oct. 18-24, by hosting several alcohol education activities throughout the week.

Alcohol Awareness Week will focus on encouraging responsible use of alcohol among those over 21, discouraging students under the legal age from drinking and helping students find alternative activities to drinking

There will be Veishea pledge tables in the Memorial Union and in the residence halls on alternating nights throughout the week. At the tables students can sign the pledge to support an alcohol free and safe Veishea. On Wednesday, Oct. 21, students wearing the Veishea pledge button will receive 50- cents off any coffee drink at Santa Fe Espresso, 116 Welch Ave.

Following is a schedule of events for the week.

Sunday, Oct. 18

Students can swim for free at "Take a Dip at State Gym" from 3-5 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 20

The residents of Oak/Elm will paint faces in the Memorial Union to remember people who have died in alcohol related accidents.

Wednesday, Oct. 21

A special alcohol presentation will be given to adult and commuter students at the "Rise and Shine" breakfast meeting.

There will be a panel discussion on women and alcohol in the Maintenance Shop of Iowa State's Memorial Union at noon.

"The Clothesline Project," a memorial to victims and survivors of domestic violence, will be displayed on Central Campus. Each T-shirt on the clothesline represents a person who has been affected by violence. Many of the T-shirts will have stories attached. People are encouraged to bring their own T-shirt and story to put on the line for themselves or a loved one. The display will run from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The project is sponsored by the Panhellenic Council and the Week Without Violence.

Friday, Oct. 23

In the Pine Room of the Memorial Union there will be "Free Coffee Friday" from 3-5 p.m. An open discussion of how alcohol is used and regulated around the world will be sponsored by the Office of International Students and Scholars and the Student Union Board.

The Union Drive Association will sponsor a dance.

Saturday, Oct. 24

"Kappa's Grand Slam Tournament," sponsored by Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, will raise money for substance abuse prevention efforts at Youth and Shelter Services. The tournament will be from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Southeast Complex Field. For more information or to register for the tournament, call Kate Kjergaard at (515) 292-3935.

The Grand Avenue Big Band from Chicago will play at the "Swing and Ballroom Dance" from 8 p.m.-midnight in the Sun Room and South Ballroom of the Memorial Union. The dance is sponsored by the ISU Ballroom Dance Club, the ISU Dance Company, the ISU Dance Department, and the ISU College of Health and Human Performance.
