ISU DESIGN PROFESSORS, STUDENTS CREATE
WORLD FOOD PRIZE BANNER

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University art and design professors Brenda Jones and John Weinkein and a group of ISU design students are creating two 24' x 20' banners for the World Food Prize awards ceremony to be held Oct. 15 at the Des Moines Civic Center.

The banners will contain agricultural images relating to the contributions of the World Food Prize recipient. The World Food Prize is awarded by the World Food Prize Foundation, located in Des Moines.

The World Food Prize Foundation contacted Iowa State University at the beginning of the fall semester to see if students could possibly design the banners as a project, Weinkein said. Weinkein and Jones are working with a team of 12 students to create the banner.

"This is a great educational opportunity for students to work on a project of this scale or magnitude," Weinkein said. "It's been quite a challenge."

The banners are made out of a fine muslin cloth and the images are painted on with acrylics. Weinkein said the same images created by the team will be used in a commemorative poster for the event.
