ISU ANNOUNCES BRANSTAD SCHOLARSHIP IN EDUCATION

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University has announced an education scholarship named in honor of Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad.

ISU President Martin Jischke announced the "Branstad Scholarship in Education" on Dec. 19 at the fall semester undergraduate commencement in Hilton Coliseum. Branstad was the commencement speaker.

"We wanted to create a lasting and working reminder to the people of Iowa that Governor Branstad has indeed been Iowa's 'Education Governor,'" said Jischke.

"In the spirit of Governor Branstad's dedication to our state, ISU is committed to helping Branstad scholars become Iowa's best teachers -- teachers as leaders committed to teaching excellence and to modeling citizenship in their profession, their schools, their communities, and throughout Iowa," said Walter Gmelch, dean of the College of Education.

The Branstad Scholarship will be initiated in Fall 1999. It is for teacher-leaders in the College of Education. As a four-year, tuition and fees scholarship, it will be granted every fall to an incoming Iowa resident freshman in a teacher education program.

The scholarship will be awarded based on academic achievements, enthusiasm for teaching, commitment to a teaching career in Iowa, involvement in extra-curricular activities, and promise of leadership ability to make a significant contribution to society as a teacher.

The scholars will be full-time students and they will need to maintain a 3.0 minimum grade point average (GPA).

Information on how to apply for the scholarship will be available from: Office of the Dean, College of Education, Room E262 Lagomarcino Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, 50011.
