ISU'S CATT CENTER SPONSORS HIGH SCHOOL WORKSHOP ON MEDIA, POLITICS

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics will hold its annual summer workshop for high school students, July 15-18.

The workshop, "Focus On Tomorrow's Leaders: New Voters + New Media = New Politics?," will offer high school students the oppotunity to learn about politics, public policy, leadership issues, and discuss the impact of media and new technology on voters, politics and government. Enrollment is limited to 30 students, who will be selected on the basis of their interest and involvement in politics, media, and school/community leadership activities. The workshop fee of $275 includes registration, housing, all meals and refreshments, and study materials. Priority registration deadline is May 29, 1998.

For an application form, or for information on nominating or sponsoring a student for the workshop, contact the Catt Center at (515) 294-3181, or rhinders@iatstate.edu.

Workshop topics will include journalists as political actors; public opinion polling; and media coverage of politicians, politics and government. Particular emphasis will be given to the role of new media, including the Internet, in educating and influencing voters. Sessions will be led by ISU faculty, media representatives, government officials and community leaders.

Students also will meet one-on-one with local and state leaders for networking opportunities. ISU students serve as mentors for workshop participants during their four days on campus.

"This year, we asked teachers to nominate students who they believe are interested in politics, media, public policy and government and who would benefit from this leadership development opportunity," said Dianne Bystrom, Catt Center director.

A limited number of workshop scholarships are available. To date, the center has received 12 full student sponsorships from Rotary International Clubs in Ames, Boone, Clear Lake, Muscatine, Newton, and Tipton, and from the League of Women Voters in Ames, Dubuque, Muscatine, Oskaloosa and Pella.
