CEDAR RAPIDS SYMPHONY KICKS OFF YEAR AT ISU

AMES, Iowa -- "A Concert on the Green," featuring the Cedar Rapids Symphony, Christian Tiemeyer, Music Director, will kick off Iowa State University's new academic year on Monday, Aug. 24, the first day of classes.

The concert will be held on Iowa State's central campus beginning at 7 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held at Stephens Auditorium.

The symphony performance is a kick off to the new academic year for Iowa State faculty, staff and students. Concert goers are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets and non-alcoholic refreshments. Free samples of Cyclone Tailgate Sundae, a new ice cream flavor from Anderson-Erickson, will be served prior to the concert.

Among the selections the Cedar Rapids Symphony will play are "The Star Spangled Banner," the theme from "2001 Space Odyssey," "Ride of the Valkyries," "The 1812 Overture," and the theme from "Titanic." The symphony also will perform the Iowa State University fight song. Iowa State's carillon will be used during the "The 1812 Overture."

The concert will be broadcast live over public radio stations at the state's three regents universities -- WOI FM (90.1), KSUI FM (91.7) and KHKE FM (89.5).

The concert is sponsored by the Government of the Student Body, the F. Wendell Miller Endowment and President Martin Jischke.
