DOBSON NAMED INTERIM LAS DEAN

AMES, Iowa -- John Dobson, Iowa State University associate vice provost for research and associate dean of the Graduate College, has been named interim dean of the ISU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The appointment is effective July 1.

The search for a new permanent dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was recently extended. The goal is to have dean candidates on campus in the fall and a new dean in the post by Jan. 1, 1998, said Provost John Kozak.

Former LAS dean Elizabeth Hoffman left Iowa State last fall. Richard Hoffmann, associate dean and professor of zoology and genetics, has been serving as interim dean. Hoffmann accepted an appointment as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Albany, State University of New York. The appointment begins Aug. 1.

Hoffmann has served as associate dean in the LAS college since 1993 and was named interim dean since last September.

Dobson has been associate vice provost for research and associate dean of the Graduate College since 1991. Prior to this, Dobson was interim vice provost for research and interim dean of the Graduate College, 1991-92; assistant vice provost for research and advanced studies, 1990-91; and assistant dean of the Graduate College, 1988-1991. He joined the ISU faculty as an assistant professor of history in 1968, and was named associate professor in 1972 and full professor in 1978.

Dobson received the B.S. in physics and history from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, in 1962; and the M.S. and Ph.D. in American history from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1964 and 1966, respectively.
