PRELIMINARY APPLICATIONS DUE FOR SCIENCE FAIR

AMES, Iowa--Middle school and high school students who are interested in being in the 1998 Iowa State Science and Technology Fair (ISSTF) must submit a preliminary application by Friday, Feb. 20.

The preliminary application will allow organizers to prepare for the upcoming fair and build up a database, according to Sande McNabb, university professor of plant pathology and forestry at ISU, and chair of ISSTF Board of Directors.

The science fair, which will be held March 27-28 at Iowa State University, is the only state wide general science fair for middle and high school students. The science areas are broadly divided into physical and biological sciences.

The official entry form, which is due Friday, March 13, requires sponsor and parent/guardian signatures. Students must submit project proposals with their entry form.

The proposals must be developed under the guidance of a teacher or other professional.

All projects need to adhere to the regulations set by the science fair's committee.

"The fair is an educational experience," McNabb said. "It gives students a chance to develop a research project and then gives them the opportunity to tell and show people what they've done."

McNabb said more than $30,000 will be given in awards and scholarships at this year's science fair.

In 1997, nearly 450 students from across Iowa participated in the science fair. Approximately 200 special awards and 88 fair awards were given at last year's event.

McNabb added that organizers are looking for science fair judges.

"People who feel they are capable of judging should contact my office," he said.
