FUNDS RAISED FOR ISU'S HABITAT HOUSE; BUILDING BEGINS

AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State University community has reached its fund-raising goal for the Habitat for Humanity blitz build.

More than $25,000 from the university was raised to construct a Habitat for Humanity home on the ISU campus. Another $30,000 in cash and in-kind gifts came from the Ames community. The cost to build the house and truck it to its site in Roland is estimated at $55,000.

Construction began Monday (Oct. 5) and continues through Oct. 9 near the intramural fields east of Jack Trice Stadium. Volunteers are working on the home from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily.

On Sept. 23 and 24, an appeal to ISU students, faculty and staff raised $3,013 for the home. McDonald's of Ames matched the donation, which put ISU's fund-raising goal over the top.

"We were very pleased with the generous donations we collected on campus during the mass appeal," said Dirk Glynn, Homecoming '98 community service co-chair. "And we want to thank John and Linda Dasher and McDonald's of Ames, United Way of Story County and the Government of the Student Body for their generous contributions."

The project's other major campus contributors are the Office of External Affairs, Jim and Kathy Melsa, the Habitat for Humanity student chapter, residence halls, Johnny Pickett, Veishea, Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils, and the College of Business.

The blitz build is a joint effort of ISU's Homecoming central committee, ISU's George Washington Carver All-University Celebration steering committee, the Government of the Student Body and the Story County Habitat for Humanity chapter.
