ISU INSECT HORROR FILM FESTIVAL STARTS FRIDAY, SEPT. 11

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's annual Insect Horror Film Festival will be Sept. 11-12 in the Memorial Union. Admission to all events is free.

Following tradition, this year's festival will include an insect- related movie each evening and tasting of insect-based recipes, such as chocolate chirpies and bug brownies. This year's feature "is a worm dip with a nice salsa base suitable for use with any chip," said Pat Miller, Committee on Lectures. Recipes for the insect treats are available.

There also will be an insect petting zoo with hissing cockroaches, giant millipedes and a butterfly tent.

Events on Friday, Sept. 11, will be in the South Ballroom of Memorial Union starting at 6 p.m. "The Naked Jungle," a film starring Charlton Heston and Eleanor Parker, will be shown at 7:15 p.m. The 1954 film is about billions of killer ants closing in on a South American plantation.

Events on Saturday, Sept. 12, will begin at 6 p.m. in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union. The film, "Mothra," will be shown at 7:15 p.m.. In this film, two tiny princesses who sing and talk in unison are kidnapped from their island. Mothra, a giant caterpillar, journeys to Tokyo to bring them home. Two cartoons, "Lady in Red" and "Bug Parade," will be shown before the movies.
